What is Educational Counseling?
Education is a long journey that begins in preschool and continues through university, graduate school, doctoral studies, and various vocational courses in our country. This journey brings with it a range of challenges, especially today when technological advances, the dynamics of our education system, and the developmental phases that students experience all intersect. Therefore, students, young people, and adults may sometimes face academic, social, or emotional difficulties.
At precisely this point, educational counselors step in to both identify the root cause of the problem and offer solutions using appropriate methods. Educational counseling helps students overcome their difficulties, gain self-confidence, and follow a more successful path in their educational journey.
Challenges Encountered in Education
Often, students who are struggling are met with negative and exclusionary attitudes from teachers or parents. However, the key is to understand the student, offer them support, and approach them with an inclusive attitude. After all, no student wants to internalize feelings of failure. The primary aim here is to uncover the causes of failure and help the student recognize and change their negative thought patterns.
Activities in Educational Counseling
Educational counseling is a process carried out in collaboration with the family and the school. Additionally:
✅ Techniques like EMDR are used to improve performance.
✅ Coaching approaches are used to strengthen the student’s motivation and self-confidence.
During the counseling process, students receive support in the following areas:
• Enhancing academic performance and strengthening classwork
• Learning effective study methods
• Goal setting and strategic planning
• Time and energy management skills
• Overcoming concentration and motivation problems
• Developing coping strategies for stress
• Managing exam anxiety
• Eliminating prejudices about learning
• Healing past negative experiences
• Rebuilding self-confidence
• Improving focus and mental clarity
• Refreshing belief and boosting motivation through memory-enhancing imagery
• Creating a clear roadmap for the future
• Discovering interests and talents and offering career guidance
• Overcoming reluctance to complete homework and developing consistent study habits
• Dealing with reluctance to attend school
All these efforts aim to help the student make the most of their potential during exam periods and throughout their academic life in general.
