EMDR

What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for “Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.” It was developed in 1987 when Dr. Francine Shapiro accidentally discovered that eye movements could reduce the distress associated with troubling thoughts. As one of the short-term therapy techniques, EMDR is widely used in psychological support processes.

How Does EMDR Work?

Every day, our minds store around 20,000 memories. Normally, in times of low stress, these memories are processed and stored in a healthy way. However, during periods of intense stress or traumatic events, this processing can be disrupted. In such cases, memories may not be fully integrated and can be stored with all the accompanying feelings, thoughts, and physical sensations. Later, when a triggering situation arises, a person may feel as though they are reliving the memory or fragments of it.

EMDR stimulates the brain’s left and right hemispheres to help reprocess these negative memories. This process helps the person become desensitized to the distressing memories and reduces their negative impact.

How is EMDR Therapy Conducted?

EMDR therapy consists of eight phases and uses a three-pronged approach that addresses the past, present, and future. The primary goal is to process and neutralize traumatic memories from the past, alleviate current symptoms, and develop new coping skills for similar situations that may arise in the future.

How Long Does EMDR Take?

EMDR is typically considered a short-term therapy. In some cases, a single session can be effective, while in others, multiple sessions may be needed. The number and length of sessions are shaped by the individual’s problem and personal characteristics.

Can EMDR Make You Forget Everything?

EMDR does not erase negative memories. Instead, it neutralizes the negative emotions, thoughts, and physical reactions associated with those memories. For example, a person who failed an exam and developed the negative belief “I am a failure” would not forget the exam itself after EMDR. However, the belief of “I can’t succeed” would be replaced by healthier, more positive thoughts.

Differences Between EMDR and Hypnosis

EMDR is performed with the client fully conscious, in the “here and now.” Hypnosis, on the other hand, involves the client entering a trance-like state, which is a different state of consciousness. This is why EMDR differs from hypnosis and requires more active participation from the client.
